‘Building regulations are leaving room for shortcuts’, the woman leading a review into fire safety after the Grenfell Tower blaze has said.

In her interim report, Dame Judith Hackitt said she was “shocked” by some of the practices she had seen, calling for better enforcement to “hold to account those who try to cut corners.” She said a “cultural change” was needed instead of “doing things cheaply”.

We at Gate Safe couldn’t agree more.

Which is why we have for some time been trying to push for automated gate safety to be covered by Building Regulations. Indeed, we have been in contact with Bob Ledsome, Deputy Director Building Regulations and Standards but our requests have fallen on deaf ears.

Perhaps, in the wake of Ms Hackitt’s comments, steps can be taken to address the safety issues for automated gates within the framework of the Building Regulations requirements?
